5 Common appliance problems and how to fix them

There are appliance problems you are going to need help with and some you really can tackle on your own. For the ones you need assistance with don’t hesitate on calling Maydone 24/7 but let’s take a look at some of the appliances issues, you can handle yourself.

Almost every appliance will break down or have some sort of issue in it use time, but not all of them require professional knowledge to resolve, so it’s important that you know how to tell apart those two instances to save money and time. However, this all depends on your level of comfort with these types of tasks, if you still feel the need to call someone there’s no shame doing that either.

Just for guidance let’s see what type of appliance problems you should probably leave to the professionals:

  1. Anything that requires you to change or touch the interior workings of the appliance
  2. Electrical repairs
  3. High-tech repairs like function chip replacements
  4. Heavy moving required repairs, it can be dangerous for your body if you don’t have the right equipment or strength, let us help
  5. Complex installations

Now that you know what should probably be left to the appliance technicians, let’s take a look at what you can do on your own.

A Faulty Fridge

Refrigerators are one of the most necessary appliances in any home, so keeping yours running is a priority for us. There are plenty of things that could happen with a fridge but the main issue would be one that’s not cooling. Here’s what you can try for that.

  1. Check your door seal, cool air could be escaping through a faulty or broken door seal
  2. Don’t overload the fridge, too many things at once can cause the fridge to overwork
  3. Clean out the fridge, get rid of old items, and check for any blockage to the cool airflow
  4. Go deep, if none of the things above work then unplug the fridge and go to the back to clean your coils.

A bad-smelling or rickety washing machine

Your clothes coming our the washing machine smelling worse than when they went in just won’t do. So, what can you do when your washing machine is emitting bad odors? You wash it!

Try this:

  1. Use your washing machine’s drum cleaning cycle if you have one
  2. Run a washing cycle with cleaning vinegar and baking soda to wash the smell away
  3. Clean the door gaskets and the outside of the machine as well

To prevent it from happening leave the door open for a bit after washing so the humidity dries out, and clean your washer regularly.

A shaky washing machine can be a real issue in a household, causing a disturbance and if you keep running it without checking what’s wrong you could really damage the appliance.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Check that the machine is leveled, if it’s not move it until it is. If your floor is uneven and that’s not possible, place a leveling support under the legs that are cause the disbalance.
  • Another thing to try is loading clothes evenly so the weight is distributed better.

If nothing works call for a technician repair, you may have a loose drum or other issues.

Dirty dishwasher

Everybody loves a dishwasher, just makes everyday life easier to manage and it actually saves water. If you find that yours is just not doing the job right lately there are some tricks you can use to get it going like before.

  1. Switch detergents
  2. Be mindful of how much you load it
  3. Clean your dishwasher’s filter
  4. Don’t rinse the dishes, scrape them. It might be hard to believe, but the small bits of food you leave on the work to clean the dishes better
  5. Take a look at your dishwasher’s spray tubes or arms
  6. Unplug or cut off power to the appliance, here’s how you do that:
    • Get the lower rack of the dishwasher out and place it aside.
    • Get your instruction manual and look for how to access the spray arms. Every model is different.
    • Once the spry arms are out, use a wire or other long cleaning utensil to free up any debris in there.
    • You can soak the tubes in vinegar or soap for a more thorough cleaning.
    • If there is too much dirt just replace them.
    • Install the arm again.
